In the work Strike a Pose artist Wafae Ahalouch combines playful images of Moroccan women wearing traditional costumes with a costume from the Triadic Ballet of Oskar Schlemmer, which was performed at the German Bauhaus Academy among others.
With this curious accumulation of culture, costume and tradition, Strike a Pose stands for taking pride in a variety of cultures coming together in a natural way. With the work the artist seeks to create a fierce image that opens up timely questions regarding cultural heritage, commonness and difference, and which defies simplified prejudices and attitudes. The work examines the ways in which one can claim space and visibility, even if you are not in a position of power.
Wafae Ahalouch is born in Tanger (Marocco) and lives and works in Amsterdam. Her drawings, paintings, installations and sculptures, show a personal vision on an estranged world. History, religion, politics, film, fairytales, familystructures and the media are important themes in her work. Ahalouch often works in series, in which she combines a variety of narratives to create new images and stories.
